Understanding the Brain's Role in Health Through a Filipino Lens
Excerpt from the book of Fr. Demetriou Carmona, SBD
In the Filipino way of life, our values are deeply rooted in "kapwa" (shared identity) and "Bayanihan" (communal unity). We're all about caring for one another, whether it's sharing a meal, offering help, or giving health advice. But when it comes to understanding our own health, especially how our brain works to keep us alive, we often rely on traditional ideas passed down through generations or the advice of well-meaning friends.
In this insightful reflection by Fr. Demetriou Carmona, SBD, we are invited to look deeper into how our brain sees health and survival—not just from a medical perspective but in a way that challenges us to rethink what we know about sickness and wellness. What if we told you that the very things we often label as sickness, like asthma, arthritis, or high blood pressure, are actually the brain's strategic moves to protect us?
In the Filipino context, we tend to view ailments like asthma or "rayuma" (arthritis) as burdens we just have to live with, or worse, as a punishment. But Fr. Demetriou offers a new perspective: our brain might actually be triggering these conditions to keep us alive. Just like how a "Nanay" (mother) would do anything to protect her child, our brain takes charge in times of crisis. It doesn't see these ailments as simple sicknesses but as necessary responses to the way we treat our bodies—whether it's due to our lifestyle, stress, or lack of proper information.
For example, when our blood pressure spikes, we rush to take "gamot" (medicine) because that's what we've always done. But maybe the brain is raising our blood pressure to keep us functioning amidst stress, high salt intake, or a lack of exercise. Just like how a "Tatlong piso ng asin" (three-peso sachet of salt) from the local sari-sari store adds flavor but might silently harm us over time, the brain responds, thinking it's doing us a favor.
In the Bible, the book of Wisdom reminds us: "Do not court death by the errors of your ways… for God did not make death. He takes no pleasure in destroying the living." This echoes the wisdom of our Filipino ancestors who valued "gamot ng kalikasan" (natural remedies) and believed in nurturing the body with what God provided. Our brain, created by God, knows how to keep us alive—if we allow it to do its job. This ancestral wisdom is a part of our cultural heritage, connecting us to our roots and guiding us in our health journey.
Fr. Demetriou reminds us that the brain is an electro-chemical marvel that manages every function of the body. Whether it's making us hungry, thirsty, or fatigued, the brain's ultimate goal is survival. It makes decisions that are sometimes hard for us to understand. But when we step back and think about the bigger picture, we see that what we label as "sakit" may actually be the brain's way of adapting to the unhealthy environments we create for ourselves.
Battling Misinformation—Paano na Ang Ating Kalusugan? (What About Our Health?)
In our fast-paced lives, bombarded by commercials promising quick fixes, we're often deceived into thinking that popping a pill or consuming an instant drink will solve our problems. We've all seen the TV ads: a smiling character takes medicine, and in seconds, they're magically healed. But real life is not a commercial. Healing takes time and deeper understanding.
Just like how we trust our elders' advice on everything from love to finances, Fr. Demetriou encourages us to trust the wisdom of the brain. Products that are marketed to push sales often trick the brain. Take artificial food, for instance. When you eat something sweet, your brain registers that you're getting energy. But if that food is artificial and lacks nutrients, your body doesn't receive what it needs. Believing you're low on energy, the brain urges you to eat more. This cycle continues until we are overeating, tired, and out of balance.
Critical Thinking: A Call to Filipinos
Fr. Demetriou's message isn't about rejecting medication or modern health practices—it's about opening our eyes to a more holistic approach to health. Filipinos are known for being resilient and resourceful. We face challenges with strength and optimism. In the same way, we must also be critical thinkers regarding our health. We must question outdated practices and challenge advertising that offers quick solutions without long-term benefits. By doing so, we empower ourselves to make informed decisions about our health, taking control and ensuring our well-being.
Taking care of our health is like tending to a rice field. It requires patience, understanding, and respect for nature's rhythm. We can't rush the process, and we can't cheat the brain. If we do, we'll pay a higher price in the long run.
Embrace the Gift of Life—Mabuhay!
This reflection invites all of us to celebrate life-mabuhay in the truest sense. It asks us to listen to our bodies, respect the wisdom of our brains, and adopt a balanced approach to health. By being informed and critical, we can avoid being stuck in old paradigms or confused by conflicting health advice. By being informed and critical, we take control of our well-being, aligning it with God's plan for us to live full and healthy lives. Let's embrace this celebration of life as a source of inspiration and motivation in our health journey.
So, let's take this challenge to heart—shift our perspectives, listen to what our brains are telling us, and enjoy the gift of life with clarity, courage, and wisdom. We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to live better, healthier lives guided by our brains, our culture, and our faith.
